More About Our Textiles
Vintage & Authentic
All Indigo & Saffron pieces were sought out and hand-picked for you from their country of origin. They are handmade, many intended for the artisan's own home and to be passed down for generations. These one-of-a-kind pieces often display characteristics of a past life, such as natural fading and wear, repairs, uneven edges, and/or slight imperfections. We believe these elements are evidence of the piece's journey and are to be admired, only enhancing their beauty and individuality. Embrace the so-called "flaws" and add a little living history to your decor!
Moroccan Rug Styles
BENI OURAIN: Handwoven by the Beni Ourain tribes in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, these rugs are traditionally white/cream in color with large black or brown diamond patterns, providing a classic and timeless look. 100% wool with a long, thick pile.
BENI M'GUILD: Handwoven in the western Middle Atlas of Morocco, these rugs traditionally have geometric designs against bright, bold backgrounds (red, purple blue, black, etc). 100% wool with a long, thick pile.
AZILAL: Handwoven in the central Moroccan province of Azilal, these rugs include colorful designs with Berber motifs. The skilled artisans create the designs as they weave, so each one is unique. Traditionally bright colors (but can also include neutral black/brown) on a white/cream background. Wool and/or cotton with a tight weave and low pile.
BOUJAD: Handwoven in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, these rugs grab your attention with their rich colors and Berber tribal prints. 100% wool with low to medium pile.
BOUCHEROUITE: Also known as "Recycled", these rugs are handmade using any materials the artisan has at hand. Scraps of old clothes, rags, and materials from other old rugs find new life in these creative and whimsical pieces, featuring vibrant colors paired with timeless design. Material content and pile varies.
MOROCCAN KILIMS: Handwoven by skilled Moroccan artisans and extremely versatile, these flat-weave rugs are made in a wide range of traditional to modern styles. They can be functional or decorative as a floor covering, tapestry, table runner, or accent piece. Characterized by thin, tight stitching and intricate patterns.
TAZNAKHT: Typically red or saffron-yellow in hue, these rugs come from just outside Ouarzazate; a city south of Morocco’s High Atlas mountains known as a gateway to the Sahara Desert. Handwoven with bold colors and tribal symbolism, these pieces add character to any room. 100% wool with low pile.
MARMOUCHA: From the Middle Atlas Mountains and handwoven by the Marmoucha tribe, these rugs include graphic detail and color in a diamond design, typically on a white/cream background. Although often confused with the work of the neighboring Beni Ourain, Marmoucha rugs are generally larger, featuring thicker lines and borders as well as large scale diamond grid patterns.
