Fes El Bali:

Pass through Bab Bou Jeloud or “The Blue Gate” and step back in time as you explore this medieval city of more than 9,000 winding alleyways. A Unesco World Heritage Site and thought to be the world’s largest car-free urban zone you will discover history, culture and amazing architecture inside this ancient walled Medina.

Where to stay:

We loved our stay at Dar Seffarine. This beautiful guesthouse was restored by the owners. They have a great photo book to see all of the work and are happy to share stories about the process. Dinners here are delicious and served family style so you get to meet and share with fellow travelers. Youseff makes a fantastic breakfast to start the day right and his travel tips are very helpful!

moroccan-rug-shop

Where to shop:

Maze of Fez is hands down our favorite rug shop! A must visit, Ibrahim will help you find the rug of your dreams! He is knowledgabe and passionate and has a collection of rugs that you could shop for hours!

ruined-garden-fes-morocco

Where to eat:

The Ruined Garden was our favorite lunch spot. Grab a fresh juice or mint tea in the garden and definitely order the smoked aubergine. They offer an amazing cooking class if you are looking to level up your kitchen skills!

choaura_tannery_pouf

What to see:

Do not miss the tanneries! The Chouara Tannery has been operating the same way for centuries. The hides are moved between large circular stone vessels of liquid where they soak in various mixtures to soften and prepare the material to be dyed. After dyeing and laying in the sun to dry, the hides are used to make all kinds of leather goods such as poufs, bags, shoes and more! And yes—the tannery smells as bad as you’ve heard. Hang on to your mint!

Don’t miss:

Seffarine Square! You can watch copper goods being hand forged and polished and do a little more shopping. We scooped up a tea pot and a copper tagine!

Get lost:

You are going to get lost so you might as well add it to your itinerary! Navigating the Medina side streets and alleyways is half the fun of any Morocco visit. You can download maps.me to help you navigate although it doesn’t always work in the more covered areas of the Medina. If you really hate getting lost you can hire a porter to walk you from your riad to dinner; meet someone new and have a chat and avoid wandering in circles!

riad-laaroussa-fes-morocco

Get pampered:

Try the spa hammam at Riad Laaroussa! As a spa guest you can also enjoy their beautiful rooftop terrace with amazing views of Fes!

Find quiet:

Jardin Jnan Sbil is a tranquil garden filled with beautiful Moroccan tiled fountains that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the Medina. You could wander here for hours!

Fes is one of our favorite cities and there is so much more to explore especially if your itinerary includes time for day trips! Below are links to some of our favorites.
